For address, check the appropriate state capital for the address of their State
Archives.
| Most of these records are kept by the states only, except that Revolutionary soldiers ‘records are in Washington, DC at the National Archives. Most state archives also have the microfilmed Index to Civil War Military Service Records. To make an inquiry into your ancestor’s records, send a self-addressed stamped envelope and a check for $10.00 (with the payee line left blank) to the proper state archives. Send them as much information as you can: full name, enlistment date and place, home county, etc. |

Draft records were compiled for men 20-35; unmarried men
35-45; married men 35-45; and those who volunteered for service. The lists are
arranged by state, then by county. Give the name of the veteran, state, county,
city (including the ward), or town.
Amnesty oaths were taken by Confederate soldiers, citizens, and amnesty papers
for high Confederate officials & persons owning more than $20,000 in property.
They show the date of the oath, the place, signature and sometimes the age,
personal description, and or Confederate military unit.

Most of the information is on Microfilm. Microfilm can either be purchased or
obtained for viewing through your local Library loan system. Ask your library
to check the List of National Archives Microfilm Publications.
