Course Description:
Technology continues to transform our culture and
economy, with results that can be both exciting and frightening.
As Christian parents and grandparents, it can be intimidating when
children know more than we do about computers! This class will
provide an introduction to some basic computer skills and the
internet. We will also address many ethical and safety related
issues that internet use and technology present from a Christian
perspective.
Class Location/Dates/Times:
- Westminster Presbyterian Church, 33rd and Indiana, Lubbock,
Texas
- Wednesday nights starting at 6:40 pm, for seven weeks starting
August 16, 2000
My Objectives for this Course:
- Help participants overcome fear about technology and computer
use
- Encourage families to use technology collaboratively at
home
- Increase awareness about the positive and negative aspects of
internet content
- Provide skills and resources to help participants further
develop computer literacy
Proposed Course Topics:
- Computer basics: Parts and Terms
- Overview / Introduction to the Internet
- The Nature of Technology: Anarchic and Equalizing
- Fantastic Web Resources
- Email basics, including sending attachments
- Tips for successful internet searching
- Validating Website Content
- Online Safety / Child Protection
- ISP, DSL, PPP: Sorting out choices in internet access
- Dealing with Objectionable Content
- Future Trends

- Read the 2 provided chapters from Don Tapscott's book,
Growing Up Digital: "Generation
Lap" and "N-Gen's
Families."
- Write a short reflection about the ideas discussed by
Tapscott below in these chapters. What personal experiences
have you had that were examples of the "Generation Lap?" What
do you think the proper role is for parents in an "N-Gen
Family.
