EXPLANATION OF PROPOSAL:

Through the activities planned in this proposal, 20 classroom teachers and/or administrators will acquire the grade-level knowledge and skills specified in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Technology. The majority of individuals in the educational arena do not presently possess these skills. Our school district does not have a structured, sequential, technology staff development program for all teachers. Technology training is presently offered on a volunteer, uncompensated basis. Teachers in our district are in dire need of a coordinated, compensated, peer-to-peer technology training program.

This School-to-Work program will provide opportunities for staff from four Lubbock ISD campuses to learn grade-specific technology skills during the regular school day. After completing this training, teachers will be able to expose students to a wider variety of computer related careers and job skills. Students will be better prepared for advanced technology courses offered for Lubbock ISD high school students, which lead to technology related careers. The following educators will be involved in this program, from these respective campuses:
*14 educators from Rush Elementary School (2 per grade level)
*4 educators from Wheelock Elementary School
*2 educators from Cavazos Junior High School
*2 educators from MacKenzie Junior High School
Interested educators from these campuses will submit a short application to the project facilitator online. Following the submission deadline, a committee composed of the two technology teachers at Rush Elementary and the principal of Rush Elementary will select project participants based on submitted applications. Applicants who have demonstrated a high level of interest in using educational technology and have previously obtained technology training on their own initiative will be given priority on the list.

Training workshops will be offered starting in January 1999. These workshops will be 3 hours long, and will include two levels: a basic and an advanced track. Sessions will be offered in the Rush Elementary Macintosh and Windows 95 labs. Participants will choose which session to attend, but all participants will be required to attend each phase of training. Training will be based on the PET grant model.
