Steps for Setting Up New Win98 Computers

Last updated 1-14-2000

These are used at Rush Elementary, Lubbock ISD. Your district technology folks may want things set up differently, so check with them first. Our school local area network (LAN) is setup with a Novell 4.11 server. We already have a shared folder setup on another Windows computer on our network that contains the Novell 2.5 Client. To set this up on your network:

Before your start:

  1. Learn how to setup a shared folder in Win95/98.
  2. Download the latest Novell client for Windows
  3. Expand the downloaded file and put it inside the shared folder on the computer you just configured for file sharing.

Make sure you have already ordered software licenses for all the programs you install during this process.

Here we go:

  1. Plug everything in, including a "live" ethernet patch cable connection to the school LAN. (You may have to connect the "drop" in the classroom to your switch/hub in the patch panel room.)
  2. Turn on the machine and click through the Windows setup / licensing menus.
  3. Rename the computer and setup Microsoft Networking
    1. Right click the Network Neighborhood
    2. Click the "Identification" tab.
    3. Give the computer a unique name (Maybe the room number and teacher's name who is using it, plus a letter (A, B, C) if there is more than one computer
    4. Enter the name of your school workgroup
    5. Enter a description if you want. You may want to include the processor speed, amount of RAM, and hard drive size for easy future reference.
    6. Click the "Configuration" tab.
    7. Under "Primary Network Logon," choose "Client for Microsoft Networks."
    8. Click "File and Print Sharing" and check the box to "give others access to my files." (That way, you can later setup a shared folder from this computer if you want.)
    9. Click OK and RESTART.
  4. Install the Novell Client software
    1. Double click the Network Neighborhood icon.
    2. Double click the computer that contains the shared folder you setup in the "Before You Start" section above.
    3. Open the Novell client folder and double click SETUP.
    4. Click through and accept all default install settings.
    5. Do not choose to set your Tree / Contect.
    6. RESTART.
    7. Before logging in to your Novell network, click the ADVANCED tab and click to select your tree, context, and volume. Then log in normally. (More help on this setup is available.)
  5. Setup Internet Explorer for Proxy Server internet access:
    1. Either ask your network administrator what your school proxy server address is or look it up on a computer already configured for internet access. (Win98: Start, Settings, Control Panels, Internet Options, Connections tab, LAN Settings button.)
    2. Refer here for these steps.
  6. Setup the home page in Internet Explorer
    1. We use a homepage saved on our school intranet for all computers setup for internet access. This way, if a teacher wants a student or class to access a webpage on the internet, we can put a link on the intranet home and EVERYONE in the entire school instantly has one click access to it. (They may have to click reload/refresh to see the updated version of the intranet homepage.)
    2. Refer to these steps for both Internet Explorer and Netscape.
  7. Install Virus Scan software
    1. Find your Virus Scan install CD.
    2. Put it in the computer and follow the instructions to install Virusscan software
    3. RESTART.
  8. Update your Virus Scan definitions
    1. If you have McAfee Virusscan with the 3.0 scan engine, refer here for instructions.
    2. RESTART.
  9. Install your printer
    1. See the steps under "To add a network Printer:" on this page.
  10. Map network CD-ROM drives and shared folders as needed
    1. You may decide to set up a shared folder for students and teachers on your network to use. Rights to this folder must be setup within the Netware Administrator program.
    2. Some software requires drive letter mapping to a data folder. Right click the folder: and chen choose the drive letter you want to assign to that folder. Note that some drive letters may be automatically assigned by your network login script (like H: F: and Z: in our case). Click "Map Root" and "Reconnect at Logon" and then click Map. Then Close:
    3. Our present network drive mapping looks like this:
    4. To map another computer's CD-ROM drive or a shared folder, go to the Network Neighborhood and locate the folder there. Right click it and choose to Map: click the box to reconnect at logon before mapping the drive letter you want.
  11. Install Networked software. For us, this includes:
    1. Accelerated Reader 4 (Networked data folder is assigned the drive letter I: for easy data folder reassignment. This happens when students don't log on and then run AR.)
    2. Type to Learn.
    3. Sky Island Mysteries.
  12. Install your software. For us, this includes the following:
    1. Productivity
      1. AppleWorks 5 (from CD)
      2. Appleworks 5.0.3 updater
      3. Office 97 (from CD)
      4. HyperStudio (from CD)
      5. KidPix (from the Network)
      6. Netscape Communicator (mainly for the Composer element, which is an excellent freeware webpage editor, and Realplayer, which is installed at the same time). Requires a RESTART.
    2. Other Software
      1. Making the Grade gradebook software commercial software
      2. Adobe Acrobat Reader freeware
      3. Quicktime 4.0 freeware
      4. Drop Zip and Stuffit Expander shareware
      5. SnagIt (screen capture utility) shareware
      6. Webshots (Desktop picture utility) freeware
      7. NetOp School (lab management software) commercial software
  13. Customize the START menu
    1. Add a shortcut to the Netware Administrator program (Nwadmin95) inside the Novell programs menu folder.
    2. Move all utility related Program folders into a new folder called Utilities (this really cuts down on the number of folders in the main programs menu.)
  14. Customize the Quicklaunch menu on the task bar
    1. Right click an icon and choose to remove it if desired.
    2. Drag an icon or shortcut to the Quicklaunch area of the taskbar to add it.
  15. Make a "Ghost" image of the hard drive you have set up (If you are using the Ghost imaging program for hard drive duplication)
    1. Make sure your IS Department installs the new version of Ghost on your server which allows the same image to be copies to computers with different size hard drives.
    2. After creating the new Ghost image, you can use the Ghost program to "clone" your hard drive on other Win98 computers. Then you don't have to repeat all these steps again!
