 Virtual Dissections

I. Virtual Pig Dissection - This web site breaks down the pig dissection into: external anatomy, respiratory system, circulatory system, digestive system, and reproductive systems.

II. Virtual Frog Dissection -This is the best virtual frog dissection I could find on the web. It uses real photographs instead of drawings and highlights parts of the body for easier learning. It also explains dissection preparation, skin incisions, muscle incisions, and the internal organs in detail. You can practice pinning the frog as well as practice the incisions on the frog. If you guess incorrectly, it tells you and lets you try again.

III.  Misc. Dissections!!! -This web site gives a list of various links to the dissections of a cat, clam, cow's eye, frog, sheep brain, starfish, mouse, or pig. All of the links (except for the pig and frog, which are listed above) on this page are listed below:

  • Cat- This web site was developed by a high school class and uses real life pictures as well as drawings. There is a lot of text to get through, but there is valuable information on the parts of the body as well as drawings with clearly labeled parts.

  • Clam- This web site was developed by a high school biology teacher for his students to use as supplementary material to what they learned in class. There are step-by-step instructions accompanied by actual photographs of the dissection of the clam. The directions as well as the pictures are very clear.

  • Cow's Eye- This web site is very helpful for teachers because it gives tips on what to point out to your students, provides clear step-by-step instructions with pictures for each step, and gives very interesting facts about eyes.

  • Sheep Brain- This web site was created at a university as a tutorial. The language is geared towards upper level students. There are some useful explanations and good pictures that a teacher can sift through to find information for his/her students.

  • Starfish- This starfish dissection tutorial uses both clear instructions as well as images to guide the student through each step of the dissection. There are also several links to various web pages that give useful information about the starfish.

  • Mouse- This web site uses cartoon images of mice to show parts of the body. It gives helpful information about dissecting mice, but the cheesy pictures give the entire web site a comical air. It is weird looking at a picture of a happy, smiling mouse while learning about how to dissect them.
